"Um Kulthoum" is the latest biography about the Arab Diva, “Assit”, written by Ratiba El-Hifni, an academic and music historian. According to this review by Al-Jadid Magazine, El-Hifni is breaking the trend of previous works (books, dramas, etc.) which were (rightly) praising the Arab legend but lacking any criticism. I find this a positive move. Whatever the admiration and reverence that we might have towards Um Kulthoum (and I’m a big fan of her music!), she was only a human being, a detail that, as the conclusion of the review states, might make her voice even more powerful and touching.
